In India, death sentence can only be given in "rare cases from rare", and it is also rare for the convicted woman to be sentenced to death. The most recent example is Nalini, a woman who was convicted of the murder of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Her sentence was heard in 2000. Ratan Bai Jain was the first woman of independent India who was sentenced to death. For the killing of three children, he was given death sentence in 1955.
